Hello,

We in the acoustics department have more and more projects where we
have to evaluate vibration and structure borne noise from train.
That's however not our strong field. We have a basic knowledge but
really need to fill the gap between we acousticians and our geologue
collegues more used to vibration from construction/ explosive. We're
therefore looking for a PRACTICAL course, at least books, that
explains the phenomenons, calculation methods and solutions. Since
we're based in Norway, we are looking for something in Europe.

Thanks,

Alain Bradette

Well there's the U.S. FTA's 'Transit Noise and Vibration Impact
Assessment' (Chapter's 7-11, available at
<http://www.hmmh.com/rail_manuals01fta.html>) or the U.S. UMTA's
'Handbook of Urban Rail Noise and Vibration Control ' (if you can find
it, it's been out of print for a while). Also, the 'Handbook of
Acoustical Measurements and Noise Control' (C.M. Harris) has a chapter
on rail vibration control. Yes, I know those are all U.S. sources.

Let's see - Yeong-Bin Yang of National Taiwan University has published a
paper reviewing ground-borne vibration research (download at
<http://nr.stic.gov.tw/ejournal/ProceedingA/EJ01_v25n1.htm#t1>). It's
very technical, but it points to several relevant works from all over
the world.

I don't know of any vibration courses in Europe. Maybe ISVR
(<http://www.isvr.soton.ac.uk/>) offers something? Try contacting David
Thomspon or Chris Jones at ISVR (<http://www.isvr.soton.ac.uk/STAFF/>).

Also, maybe you should look into attending the 8th IWRN
(<http://www.isvr.soton.ac.uk/IWRN8/>) later this year.

I do not know any good (and modern) practical course or text book.
I recommed a collection of journal papers.
- - -
Old course material in Swedish: Vibrations dag 1981: Kan vi tolerera
trafik - och byggverksamhet i tätort? Rapport 251, Ingenjörsvetenskaps
akademien 1981.
another old book (basic ground borne acoustics)
White J E: Underground sound, Application of Seismic Waves,
 Elsevier, 1983, 253.

Alaine,

I suggest that you take a look at the UK Association of Noise Consultant's
book on the subject.  It is available for sale to none members. Click on the
following link should take you straight to a description.

Thank you Herb, Kari and Phil for your help and very relevant
references. I really appreciate.

I've downloaded a lot of stuff and will read through it...I already
feel a bit more clever!
