Hi all,  I need help,I have a neighbour that runs a very loud truck in
the early hours of the morning,he ignores all pleas to desist and the
local authorities cannot or will not help. How can I pick up his noise
and throw it back magnified somewhat.I need to control the direction of
this noise so that I will not affect others in the vicinity. I
appreciate that this might be an unusual request but I'm sure someone
will rise to the challenge.I am a very practical person but as thick as
two short planks regarding the ins and outs and wherefores of the
theory.

Your ISP indicates a Western Australian location.
I would suggest you contact the WA Department of Environment & ask about your
rights under the Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997.

When I did some business in West Virginia a "solution" they referred to as
"mountain law" was mentioned more than once.   :-)

In view of the concern about other neighbors, do you really want to throw
back the sound (amplified)?  Or, would you rather work on cancelling the
noise at your end?  (You may have the same set of issues either way).

Assuming that the frequencies from the truck are relatively low, or at least
that most of the energy is at lower frequencies, then maybe a noise
cancellation method would work for you.
In principle, it goes like this:

Put a speaker or speakers at the edge of your property between your house
and the normal location of the truck.  I think the closer to the truck the
better - but that's a guess really.  Note that speakers can be susceptible
to damage from high velocity projectiles or high-mass, low velocity
projectiles.  So, maybe place them behind a berm.

Drive the speakers so that the sound received at your house is minimized.
Don't expect to get rid of broadband noise this way (sounds like air
escaping from a compressor hose aren't likely to be reduced).  Engine noise
may well be reduced though.
The simplest method that puts speakers "between your head and the truck" are
noise cancelling headphones.

You put a microphone where you are, process the microphone output to drive
the speakers.  Google on Automatic Noise Cancellation and Adaptive
Filtering.

Hi Fred,   Thanks for your input. The mountain law would be the most
efficient reply, however.I would prefer to throw the sound back at him,I
did envisage something like taping his noise, putting it onto a loop.Let
the tape be controlled with a sound operated switch that activated when
he switched the motor on and hit the revs. Then somehow the sound would
be aimed back to him in a fairly narrow beamed speaker.I think [or
hope] that the subsequent noise would be difficult to trace as it would
cease when he cut the motor, leaving him somewhat puzzled but open to
abuse from his compliant spouse presumably tucked up in bed fast
asleep,[which is why he does his deeds as far from his house as
possible and very close to mine]. Does any of this make sense, if so
can the equipment mentioned above be obtained?
Cheers.

What would happen if you took the frequency of the truck rumble- found
out the radio frequency of his speakers and used some type of recieving
device to funnel the frequency of the rumble straight into his truck
speakers?  Would that work and what type of device could you use?

Hi Dragone,
Strewth ! I think I understand the above, but I only get this noise for
about 5 to 10 minutes at a time.Doesn't sound much but at 3.00 am it
gets to one. I don't think that he would have any speakers on at the
time so maybe another try.
Thanks

Give that plan 30 seconds worth of thought and you would see a hundred
flaws (well, dozens anyway). The biggest one is that it would cost a lot
money, and two, require a lot of transmitting equipment. Biggest flaw,
you'd have to transmit on every AM and FM station-- something most
governments frown heavily upon and show their displeasure by heavy fines
and/or jail time.
