if you know the far - field SPL, can you calculate the intensity using
characteristic impedance?

Hello Richard,

if there is given a sound pressure level SPL
you find here the sound pressure in Pascals and the
sound intensity in Watts/m²:

http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-soundlevel.htm

The sound intensity J = p²/Z.

Kind regards

Yes.  In the far-field, where p and v are in-phase, p=rho*c*v, and I=p*v (or
half that quantity if one has peak rather than rms values).
