Hello all,

I write a B.sc thesis at the moment. My job is to collect information
required in order to design silencers for big dieselengines such as ship-,
powerplant engines.

My questions is: Are there any good internet sites regarding exhaust noise
attenuation in ships? Of course if anyone know something you can answer here
too. I would especially appreciate information on spark arrestors and
different design solutions. I have good books here but in them I have'nt
find anything regarding spark arresting and manufacturers solutions. As you
know the silencer manufacturers are not willing to give any detailed
information.
Thank you very much in advance!

None that I know of. There has been information provided by
manufacturers of silencers for emergency electric power generators. The
Maxim Silencer company in the US (Lake Charles, Louisiana?) has provided
such information. Diesel Engine sizes are typically up  to one or two
megawatt energy capability. Such diesel engine silencers have been
graded as "critical" or "supercritical" or "hospital" styles for
instance. One basic attenuation curve by them has only one algorithm,
scalable in frequency only according to exhaust pipe diameter...

Spark arresters by law must always be included in the installation to
avoid fires. The volume and size of these arresters always also gives
them a little acoustical benefit. The manufacturers might, but perhaps
not always, acquire and publish noise reduction data for them

The emergency power generator companies (Caterpillar in the US for
instance) know about these silencers, and so they, in your country
(Siemens?), should be able to lead you to those data.

> Summary: Adaptive interference (or noise) cancellers are widely used. An adaptive noise canceller adaptively filters a noise reference input to maximally match and subtract out noise or interference from the primary (signal plus noise) input.
