US system works rather differently. You apply to a department, which
you find to have a generally good program that interests you, and
after getting there choose someone to work with.

In any case, I'm not sure you are asking the right question. The right
question is, what do you want to do? Botany is a broad field. When you
read papers, whose work interests you? Those are people you write to
(or, in US, whose departments you consider applying to).
