We know that the tsunami wreaked havoc on human populations along
the coastlines suffering the full brunt of the tidal waves associated
with the tsunami, but didn't it also havoc on penguin populations in
South Antarctica?

I would imagine it would have been destructive to newborn and young
penguins.  But penguins constantly deal with rough breaking surf and
would more than likely escape any flooding or tidal wave occurances
without harm.
