I've found several of these guys in my small backyard garden:

They resemble Japanese beetles, but are smaller (about 7mm) and
instead of a shiny bronze-colored back have light brown backs with
darks spots.

One of them was sitting on a grape leaf and I am pretty sure it was
eating it!

Who are these and how much should I be concerned? I grow some
tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and herbs.

I am in central Virginia.

Thanks!

Ah, didn't see a location posted in rec.gardens (where I also replied).

That's an Oriental beetle (Anomala orientalis), definitely a pest.

It's been in Virginia a while.  In Michigan, it's a more recent arrival.
