If the capacitor in the primary is changed the frequency changes, if the
capacitor is removed the reaction stops. At present the oscillator
"squegges" - the amplitude builds up then stops then starts up again. The
frequency here is 588KHz and the amplitude 5mV.

The hydrogen tube is visible inside the transformer on the left.

The pressure of the hydrogen in the tube is 3 Torr.

When I did this 40 years ago there was a visible bluish glowing line of
plasma down the axis.

Now 4 hours later the signal is still there.

Now the tube has stopped oscillating and is giving amplified noise. The only
amplifier I have there is the oscilloscope and the signal is now 1.8 mV. The
broadcast bands generally give a few micro volts so it looks like it is on
the verge of oscillating but is acting as an amplifier instead.
