Simpler than bacteria?

Are there any organisms universally considered "living" (so excludes
viruses) that are simpler than bacteria? I'd appreciate any references
you may have. Thank you.

Mycoplasmas and rickettsias (although arguably both are mostly
bacteria-like).

I agree with Larry.

Related to your question though  you might care to look up a few references
on the possible origions of mitochondria. :)

You might also research Chlamydia : you  could start here
