Hello,

I am planning to buy a microscope and I am considering the following 2
models:

Nikon
TypeYS 100
Objectieven 4x, 10x, 40x, 100x Oil
Oculairen 10x
Condensor Condensor met diafragma
Tafel: Kruistafel met coaxiale bediening rechts
Revolver: 4-voudig
Verlichting: Ingebouwde regelbare verlichting
Bijzonderheden: Zwaar statief met ergonomisch geplaatste grof-
en fijn-instelknoppen

and:

Leitz binoculaire microscoop
Type: SM - Lux
Objectieven: Achromaat 10x0,20 , PL 40x0,65 , PL.Apo. 100x1.32
Oculairen: 2 stuks Periplan 10x18 brildragers
Condensor: Condensor met klaplens 0,9
Tafel: Kruistafel met coaxiale bediening links
Revolver: 4 voudig
Verlichting: Ingebouwde regelbare Köhler verlichting

My question is simple, can someone tell me which one is the best to buy?
The Leitz is the most expensive one, but also the most old one.

Thanks.

Assuming the Leitz is in good shape and the APO 100x is clean and not
hazy, the old Leitz is recommended. The YS100 is a cheap Nikon student
scope.  If you prefer the Nikon scope, try to look at the Eclipse
series. You can find them used on eBay these days.

Well the Nikon YS100 scope is about 850 euro's
and the Leitz is about 1000 euro's.

Both are from are from a specialised store which gives me on both scopes 1
year
warranty. So I expect the condition of both scopes are good.

I want to use the scope for biological purposes (f.e. study a cell layout
etc..)
Also I can buy a mountable camera brace so I can make pictures with it.

If I choose the Leitz scope, will this one give me enough good quility? Or
is the Nikon
better suited for the job? What kind of diffrences can I expect? Is it worth
the diffrence in money?

I am a bit newby in this field of expertise, so any help is appreciated.

Kindest regards,

BlueICEz

Here are two images of the both microscopes.

The Leitz Plan APO has a resolution of 1.32 while the oil 100x lens
that comes with the YS100 offers just 1.25 (standard Achromat).
Additionally, the APO lens is much better corrected for various
wavelengths and hence more suited for photomicrography. There are
however a few issues:

1) The APO lens MUST be clean. Test it before you purchase the scope or
ask for the right to return the scope if not satisfied with the APO
lens. I think the APO lens is the best part of this scope.
2) The working distance of the APO 100x lens is rather small with the
Leitz scope, but with care and over time, you will get used to it.

If the Leitz is in good shape, the Nikon YS100 is worse.

Side note: As an amateur, you should never buy new if there is a decent
opportunity to buy a good used scope.

The offered mic is equipped with a Plan-Apo 100/1,32. The free working
distance is 0,25 mm.
The w.dist. of an achromat 100/1,30 oil (Leitz) is 0,10 mm; that of an
(not plan) apo 90/1,32 0,09 mm, of an apo 90/1,40 0,03.

So the free working distance of a Plan-Apo 100:1 /1,32 ist not so bad
at all.

Greetings from Bavaria.

Yes. I confused this objective's WD with the one of its "non-plan siblings".
The working distance of the Leitz plan APO is certainly not a problem at
0.27mm. If this lens is fine and the scope is in decent shape, it will be a
great purchase. Later, he can either upgrade the condenser as Gordon
suggests or trade the APO lens for something else.

Thanks,

Gregor

GTO is right.  The E. Leitz is a great benchtop, clinical microscope.  If it
has been well cared for it is a bunch better than the Nikon, a good student
'scope but a student 'scope.  There are a bunch of E. Leitz accesories out
there for just about any purpose.  There is an advantage to being an
amature, you get all the older microscopes at very cheap prices.  Of course
have some one else who is experienced look at the instrument and give their
views on it.

Good luck!

Agreeing with Gregor and Kevin go with Leitz if the objectives
are good and offer him $750 for it and see what he says. You can
always pay full prices but he may take less and you never will
know unless you ask.

It is a lot easier to find optional parts for a Leitz and repair
parts in the unlikely case you ever need them. It may need  a
better lighting set up I can't tell from that view but that's
not a big deal to correct. You can replace the stand for $60USD
on ebay and darkfield condensers are regularly available. If you
want 100x darkfield you mush get another 100x objective or find
a stop for that one. The Leitz oil immersion darkfield condenser
and 1.2 na. But their dry dark field will work well with you 40x
and 10x.

The Leitz scope is made up with odd lot of objectives. The
PL.Apo. 100x1.32 will not give you it full performance with the
light source and condenser you have. If its in good shape buy
its self it is worth about $250 to $300USD on ebay. You should
do better trading with a dealer that can check it out if you
deiced to trade it in on phase set up or something. Things like
this are much easier to do with the Leitz than Nikon because
there are some many Leitz parts around.

Thank you all for your suggestions...

I think I am going to buy the Leitz scope.

Next wednesday I am planning a trip back to the store, and I will ask if
they could
set it up for a demonstration so I can give it a try.

If am going to ask/check if the Pl. Apo 100x lens (and otherlensen) are
clean and in good condition.

The store gives me 1 year of warranty on the entire scope, so I think it is
all ok.
I will also ask for the right to return if it isn't ok.

I will also try to do something about the price. However I don't exactly
know how much
these used scopes in good condition cost, maybe someone here can help me?

I already saw that an easy to use camera mount brace could be attachted to
this scope. Does anyone know
what kind of quality I can expect with a regular sony cybershot 3,3 Megapix.
digital camera ?

The brace costs about 50 euro's if I buy it with the scope. I think that is
kind of expensive so I will try
do get it for free if I buy the scope. Are there other solutions for
(digital) photography on this scope?

Again I thank you all  for your help!

BlueICEz
