I am looking for a stereo zoom microscope that I can mount my Nikon FM3a on.
Would the Konus Diamond 20-40x be a good one ?  What worries me about this
one and others like it is that the camera would be hanging out over the
microscope, thus make it unsteady.  Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

I do not know this particular scope but I have a few stereo zoom
scopes (Wild, Olympus) that have a vertical phototube for the camera.

It's all about the eyepiece versus camera, not the whole scope.

Your otherwise wonderful camera and camera lens will no doubt vignette
strongly if coupled to a normal eyepiece for afocal photography.  You'll
need either a "giant eyepiece" or to use a focal (projection) mode.  See my

Jake:

The following is just my two cents regarding combining an SLR to a stereo
microscope.

1) With the right adapter, it will "work", but knowing the great quality of
Nikon lenses, the results will most likely disappoint. A stereo zoom without
a dedicated photoport does not allow for taking photomicrographs of great
quality, especially not when it is a so called low-cost stereozoom. A good,
used stereozoom goes for $400 or more. A used Bausch Lomb is great if you
really want a stereozoom. They are build like tanks.

2) I usually do not get too impressed when reading 20-40x. Stick with the
20x or less. In microscopy, resolution is key, which is not always increased
by increasing magnification. Did you explore all your option using special
adapter lenses for your SLR? You may be able to get a much better setup
together using appropriate close-up and macro lenses. The stereo effect is
all gone when taking pictures through one ocular of a stereozoom.

3) Did you compare this scope with offerings from dealers that sell used
equipment. It's worth it. For example, see
http://www.microscopesfromnightingale.com/cgi-bin/shop/commerce.cgi

4) I do not know the brand you referring to in your post. But I would not
buy it. I like a scope to last.

Bluntly, a real piece of crap.  Buy a used stereo from a good dealer, used
stuff is what an amature should get.  Try the Capovani Broth.
(www.capovani.com/dp/cat/107/63160/ilist.cfm?LCl=342&menuid=m_2_2_1).  They
buy whole semi-conductor plants, right now they have 39 stereos for sale.
Since you want to do digital photography, get a trinocular stereo.
