Hello,

I am looking for information and pictures related to kalunite. So far,
I have only found little information about it by Googling (mostly under
the article about alum from the Columbia Encyclopedia). I do have huge
chunks of alum crystals at home though those technically are not
kalunite (which is the mineral form of the compound occuring in
nature). What rocks contain kalunite? Rocks that have kalunite in
enough abundance to the point that it is visible would be great. Any
clue is welcome (like the title of a good mineralogy book with
information on it).

Hello S.A.,
I could not find "kalunite" in either Dana's or Fleischer's references.
"KALINITE" is cited in Dana's System of Mineralogy as a Potash Alum.
Alunite has (OH) in its chemistry and is converted to Alum, which has (H2O)
in its composition. Mendozite is  Soda Alum that may be of interest in your
search. Hope this helps, Will E.

Thanks for the extra clue, will1.

I googled kalinite and found many more references about it, all
confirming that kalinite is indeed potash alum. I found a clue about
the difference between kalinite and kalunite somewhere else, however.

In Powerword 2005 (a well-known Chinese/English electronic reference
collection), kalinite is the fiber form of potash alum, whereas
kalunite is the rock form of the same mineral.

Ah! Try "K-ALUNITE". It's all in the dash. Will E.
