Details of the Ekpyrotic Universe theory

Authors: (Justin Khoury, Princeton; Burt Ovrut, UPenn; Paul Steinhardt,
Princeton and Neil Turok, Cambridge):

Our paper proposes a new theory of the very early universe that resolves the
famous puzzles of the hot Big Bang picture -- the horizon, flatness and
monopole problems -- and that generates fluctuations in energy that seed
galaxy formation and produce temperature variations in the cosmic microwave
background. The model is based on the idea that our hot Big Bang universe
was created from the collision of two three-dimensional worlds moving along
a hidden, extra dimension.

The inflationary model of the universe developed in the 1980's by Alan Guth
(MIT), Andre Linde (Stanford), Andreas Albrecht (UC Davis) and Steinhardt
was designed to resolve these very same problems, relying on a period of
exponential hyper-expansion, or inflation.

Conceptually, the Ekpyrotic model is very different. There is no inflation
or rapid change happening at all. The approach to collision takes places
very slowly over an exceedingly long period of time. It is quite fascinating
that rapid change and very slow change can produce nearly the same effects.

The difference results in one distinctive observational prediction, though:
Inflationary cosmology predicts a spectrum of gravitational waves that may
be detectable in the cosmic microwave background. The Ekpyrotic model
predicts no gravitational wave effects should be observable in the cosmic
microwave background.

In the Ekpyrotic model, when the two three-dimensional worlds collide and
"stick," the kinetic energy in the collision is converted to the quarks,
electrons, photons, etc. that are confined to move along three dimensions.
The resulting temperature is finite, so the hot Big Bang phase begins
without a singularity. The universe is homogeneous because the collision and
initiation of the Big Bang phase occurs nearly simultaneously everywhere.

The energetically preferred geometry for the two worlds is flat, so their
collision produces a flat Big Bang universe. According to Einstein's
equations, this means that the total energy density of the universe is equal
to the critical density. Massive magnetic monopoles, which are
over-abundantly produced in the standard Big Bang theory, are not produced
at all in this scenario because the temperature after collision is far too
small to produce any of these massive particles.

Quantum effects cause the incoming three-dimensional world to ripple along
the extra-dimension prior to collision so that the collision occurs in some
places at slightly different times than others. By the time the collision is
complete, the rippling leads to small variations in temperature, which seed
temperature fluctuations in the microwave background and the formation of
galaxies. We have shown that the spectrum of energy density fluctuations is
scale-invariant (the same amplitude on all scales). The production of a
scale-invariant spectrum from hyper-expansion was one of the great triumphs
of inflationary theory, and here we have repeated the feat using completely
different physics.

The building blocks of the Ekpyrotic theory are derived from Superstring
theory. Superstring theory requires extra dimensions for mathematical
consistency. In most formulations, 10 dimensions are required. In the mid
1990s, Petr Horava (Rutgers) and Ed Witten (IAS, Princeton) argued that,
under certain conditions, an additional dimension opens up over a finite
interval. Six dimensions are presumed to be curled up in a microscopic ball,
called a Calabi-Yau manifold.

The ball is too small to be noticed in everyday experience, and so our
universe appears to be a four-dimensional (three space dimensions and one
time dimension) surface embedded in a five-dimensional space-time. This
five-dimensional theory, called heterotic M-theory, was formulated by Andre
Lukas (Sussex). Ovrut and Dan Waldram (Queen Mary and Westfield College,
London). According to Horava-Witten and heterotic M-theory, particles are
constrained to move on one of the three-dimensional boundaries on either
side of the extra dimensional interval.

Our visible universe would be one of these boundaries; the other boundary
and the intervening space would be hidden because particles and light cannot
travel across the intervening space. Only gravity is able to couple matter
on one boundary to the other sides. In addition, there can exist other
three-dimensional hyper-surfaces in the interval, which lie parallel to the
outer boundaries and which can carry energy.

These intervening planes are called branes. The collision that ignites the
hot Big Bang phase of the Ekpyrotic model occurs when a three-dimensional
brane is attracted to and collides into the boundary corresponding to our
visible universe.

The term ekpyrosis means "conflagration" in Greek, and refers to an ancient
Stoic cosmological model. According to the model, the universe is created in
a sudden burst of fire, not unlike the collision between three-dimensional
worlds in our model. The current universe evolves from the initial fire.
However, in the Stoic notion, the process may repeat itself in the future.
This, too, is possible in our scenario in principle if there is more than
one brane and, consequently, more than one collision. We plan to discuss
this possibility in future work, along with further speculations about what
preceded the collision that made our present universe.

As a final remark, we feel that it is important to realize that Inflationary
theory is based on Quantum Field theory, a well-established theoretical
framework, and the model has been carefully studied and vetted for 20 years.
Our proposal is based on unproven ideas in String theory and is brand new.
While we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest with which the paper has
been received, we would suggest some patience before promulgating these
ideas in order to leave time for us to produce some follow-up papers that
introduce additional elements and to allow fellow theorists time for
criticism and sober judgment.

Why do educsated and supposedly intelligent men like yourselves chase after
complex threories to explain our Universe.
A Universe based on an extra spatial dimensions, for example, is infinitely
more complex than one based upon three spatial dimensions since every increment
of distance along the extra dimension is as complex as our three spatial
dimensions. Adding extra complexity allows any apparent inconsistencies in
three dimensional theories to be overcome (Any jackass can make a theory work
by adding a superflous degree(s) of freedom.).

If one derives gravitational theory correctly, one obtains gravitational
transformations of the same form as the Lorentz Transformations of SR as must
be the case if the Principle of Equivalence is to apply. GR does not meet this
test and required the invention of curved space to make it work.(The
justification given for the curved space was 'why shouldn't we consider space
to be curved, no one can prove it isn't -this is Science?) If you delve into
the mathematics of GR's derivation you will find that a basic error had been
made! This error is of a type which would not have been tolerated in a freshman
calculus course!

Correctly deriving the gravity transformations in an FLT system provides:
Force(F) = 1
Length(L)=1/(1-$)
Time=(1-$)
Where $ is the gravitational potential between elevations.

Applying these transformations yields a picture of the gravitational field
which is consistent with the observations in the Sun's puny gravitational field
which allegedly verify GR. The difference only becomes significant when the
gravtitational potential (from infinity) approaches unity. In addition, they
reveal the source of gravitational energy, explain the nature of gravitational
collapse, the expanding universe, and the nature of the alleged "big bang" ,
and the creation of the universe. These latter results come about unexpectedly
and were not inserted by the nature of the derivation. I'm afraid Dr. Albert
really screwed up a century of physics. Physical theory must be compatible with
Quantum Theroy amd with STR, but it does not have to be compatible with GTR.

interested if you could find a defect in the material. So far no one has.

After reading PART of section 4 esp 4.2.5 and onwards. My conclusion is that
although VERY WELL constructed it lacks a fundamental truth which is. There
have not been enough observations to verify it completely.

For example the same truth even applies to something as simple as the
inverse square law. Other examples are jumping to mind almost constantly
which is why the search and SPECULATION goes on.

Mr. Einsteinhoax, I doubt if you even know what the Ekpyrotic theory is!

Perhaps you should stop spouting and get "educsated".

Spud,

I agree that this is an interesting theory. It is extremely complex. I
believe that the extreme complexity of this and other recent
multi-dimensional theories shows that science is ripe for a unifying theory
that enables a return to simplicity. Extreme complexity is required to
enable our seemingly disparate understandings to be tied together in a
coherent manner. However, in the meantime, this is an interesting, and
comtroversial, approach. I particularly like the cyclic nature of the
universe that they present. However, I do not understand how their
elimination of inflation can account for the present state of expansion.

In case you do not know, the heretic is a spammer. He ridicules other
theories, because he believes that strong ridicule will lend more credence
to his own. He has claimed for years that no one has been able to discredit
any of his ideas, because he refuses to consider at all any challenges to
his statements. In order to be able to justify his continued spam, he
changes his name in the from field each time, so that people will not
realize that a posting is from him and so be able to ignore him. I recommend
against getting caught up in his fantasy by responding to him.

Then remember Spud to classify so called ekpyrotic theory under
sci fi due to its dependence on acknowledged unproved ideas in M or
string theory. And as such it is not a logically or proofed mathematical
based theory but imaginary story. You can always close the gravitational
loop creatively if not based on real world basis and take all the
imaginary dimensions or strings you want. But what separates the sci fi
folks from the real scientists and researchers is the constriction of
real world limitations.

And if you want reserved time for general analysis of unscientific or
purely speculative concocted notions then don't post its particulars on
these serious science net newsgroups for rebuttal of poorly thought out
ideas. Now if you honestly reexam and claim it as fun sci fi then post
it on alt.sci fi.science for the Hollywood story lurkers and producers
looking for new hype motion picture ideas. Your basic elementary flaw in
ekpyrotic theory is that the energy based Universe cannot have been
created by colliding strings, branes, multiverses, worm holes, unlimited
dimensions, imaginary black holes, tears or folds in space fabric, etc.,
for energy per <R> is mathematical proofed indestructible.

Nightbat's postulate " Continuing Universe Rule " has a habit of growing
on you for cyclical resolution of universal dynamics. It is unifying
understanding of the quantum and relativistic theory presentations that
are mathematical based and explanatory of the multi fields inability to
become base quantum and macro unified due to present disturbed multi
field effects without outside force intervention or observed
confirmation. And don't even try weaving that sci fi hype into my
presentation for I'll sent you out the same way I sent the other
Hollywood type folks, there isn't a lucrative contract for inducing
nightbat to give up his high scientific principles or formulations.

Difficulty of understanding and interest handling is in the mind
and mental ability of the examiner, therefore keep it simple, but not
too simple. Capture the minds interest, the body comes with it.
Technical papers can be interest varied and particular to subject, read
what interests you, and yes, you can ignore the rest, expand you mind
and take it all in. No one said science is for everyone, but it has an
effect on all, sooner or later. If you like my theory I have another

I think that the Ekpyrotic Universe Theory should definitely be taken
seriously.

Recent observations have lead to the conclusion that the Universe
started accelerating its expansion about 5 billion years ago.  I can't
see how the Big Bang Theory can explain this.

Perhaps the Ekpyrotic Theory with its collisions of branes, thus
affecting our Universe from the outside as it were, can explain the
influence that suddenly started the velocity of our Universe's
expansion to begin increasing 5 billion years ago.
