JTides is a free Java program that provides worldwide tidal predictions for
over 3300 sites, and provides its results in a number of useful ways.
JTides has recently managed to reacquire data sources for some United
Kingdom sites after being obliged to remove all UK data several years ago
at the insistence of the UK Hydrographic Authority.

JTides 4.9 includes a number of bug fixes and enhancements, including the
ability to create multi-year Web page datasets of particular sites,
suitable for posting online or downloading to a PDA.

Those who have a prior version of JTides installed should delete their
JTides user directory before running the new version, to allow a database
upgrade.

JTides is free and multi-platform. Home Page:

In April 2002, the UK Hydrographic Office ordered the removal of all UK
tidal data from JTides and all other free tidal prediction programs.
The fact that this is a free program, created in the public interest,
has had no effect on their zeal to collect nonexistent copyright fees.
The fact that this decision will decrease the safety of sailing in the
UK has not swayed them in the slightest.

*******

Dick heads aren't they. The Met Office is the same. So what has
changed, the page you gave in the link showed there was no change in
the situation.

UKHO has always sold it's tidal information, as have most other HOs. For
details of how they view use of their copyright
http://copyright.ukho.gov.uk/

For people who want free tidal information the UKHO does provide this on
their own web site.http://easytide.ukho.gov.uk/EasyTide/EasyTide/index.aspx
so I see their position as not being something that decreases safety.

The promulgation of available information if it is being held up, is a
potential threat. You have only got to look at the report of the
Hurricane Bush disaster to see that.

But since the information has been worked out at the expense of tax
payers it should be freely distributed to them by whatever means they
need.

Even if that means some johnnie foreigner getting hold of it.
Personally I would publish and be damned. And if I had the web space
and the know how, I'd offer to do so for the OP.

It would appear that you have not looked at the links provided, UKHO makes
UK tidal info available for current data ie the next 7 days available free,
nor does it charge licence fees for any one else who wishes to make current
data available, so there is no restriction on current data. If you want long
term information you have to pay.

Current Government policy is that UKHO is self funding so that those who do
not use the services do not pay for them, it is only services provided for
other government organisations such as the RN or the Coastguard that is
funded by the Govt.

At present there is nothing to stop Johnny Foreigner getting the current
data free.
