Hi,

Take a look at this location on Google Earth

Latitude  0°15'3.78"N
Longitude  6°44'54.90"E

Does anyone know or have a theory as to what causes these formations?

I suspect it is localized wind gusts.  It's not uncommon to see similar
features on the surface of lakes etc.
But don't ask me to explain it!
cheers
Bill

Moin,
maybe there upwelling along the coast, caused by the winds. So there
are a lot of nutrients and clorophyl, and maybe this causes this
structres.
