I recently started studing ocean ciruculation and did not get the basic
idea how it works.

As a starting point I imagine a planet (perfect bowl) with flat ground,
water on top, no landmasses and equal solar radiation on all places. So
we have rotation left. What happens to the water?
I think since the planet is rotating (like earth does) water starts
flowing westwards. But then? Since the centrifugal force decreases from
equator to the poles something must change. As far as I understand what
I read a gyre will appear on each hemisphere, with rigth roation on
north hemisphere and left on south. Correct? If yes/no - Can you explain
me why?

Thx in advance

Hi Micheal

Perhaps it helps you in reading about geostrophic flow.
I think the Internet is full of explanation about the geostrophic efect.

If still there is a problem in understanding it,
write me. and i try to help
