You can predict them by knowing where undersea volcanic mounts are located,
measure the accumulation of the pillow basalt. With some simple math (ok,
not so simple, you need to know how to compute how fast a cone grows given
the volume predicted to be extruded) you can figure out when approximatly
the island will break the surface of the ocean.
Hawaii has a seamount that is growing right now south of the big island. If
all goes right, and the current activity keeps up, it will surface in about
5000 years. A little bit late for me to buy property.
