Max Transmit distance over LEAF fiber?

What is the max transmission distance that can be acheived over Corning LEAF
fiber?  Say using a 45 mb/s data stream or at some SONET rate like OC-3.
And with only a single wavelength on the fiber.

Any tips or references to help understand this are appreciated!

Calculating the max. transmission distance in an optical fiber is one
of the basic issues in optical technology. Take into acount that
pulses broaden as they are transmitted through the fiber. Take this
broading roughly as deltaT=fiber length * fiber dispersion * source
linewidth. You must make sure that deltaT is less than, let's say, a
little fraction of the bit time so as to avoid intersymbol
interference that would close the digital eye diagram. So, for a
correct answer to your question it is compulsory to know the
linewidth of your laser as well as the max. tolerable intersymbol
interference (bit error rate) you can tolerate.

it could be designed for max distance....so whatever laser worked best. the
BER would be say 10-9.  How far would that go?

I should assume you're transmitting digital baseband signals,
shouldn't I?, and that you have the money to buy the best laser you
might find in the market, haven't you?  :wink:

YES.  those are good assumptions.  I want to build a purpose built system
with low bandwidth  or data capacity needs and ultra longhaul.  It need be
the only carrier on the fiber so all power can be put in that carrier.  I
think it will be cheaper, including design cost then to buy commercial telco
gear that is built to push max bits throught the fiber.  I dont have that
contraint...but the few sites with repeaters or regens the better.  So im
interested in how far I can got without repeat or regen becuase Im hoping
there is a cheaper way then use off the shelve telco gear.

any thoughts?
