I don't think it can. Kind of like the repairing mechanism in teeth. As long
as the mantal covers the shell new layers can be laid down but it doesn't
heal so for as I know.

No, mollusk shells do heal, though I don't know the details. But there
is an increase in evidence that predators are handling shells to try
their strength coincident with the evolution of hermit crabs, because
hermit crabs can't repair their shells, and multiple incidents of stress
are cumulative on them but not on mollusks.

Search for
"mollusca list" and "paleonet". Try to be as specific as possible as to any
particular group
you have a special interest in for more direct replies.
