Hi. I was just wondering if anyone knows of any good collecting sites
in the Pierre shale in south dakota. Thanks for any help.

Just about anywhere you can find an exposure I think.  I've only been
through the state a couple of times.  As I recall, there are good
exposures around Wasta.  Lots of Baculites fragments.  Some good
ammonites I'm told.  As I recall, the full formation is said to be
exposed in road cuts West of the Fort Randall Dam.

A few others from my data base -- No clue how good they are

"Bridger","Meade","SD","Cheyenne River","Cretaceous","Pierre

"Elk Creek",,"SD",,"Cretaceous","Pierre Shale","Cephalopods -

"Fort Randall Dam",,"SD","on US18 complete section of Pierre Shale on
W side of the Missouri River","Cretaceous","Pierre","vertebrates and
invertebrates--",,

"Rapid City",,"SD","in road cuts on Star Route

"Sage Creek/Ft Pierre","Stanley","SD",,,,"Baculites",,

"Wasta",,"SD","in road cuts on
I-90","Cretaceous","Pierre","invertebrates in large concretions.",,

"Wasta",,"SD","N along Elk Creek and Cheyenne

"Yankton",,"SD","3 mi W near Gavins Point Dam in quarries along N bank
of Missouri River","Cretaceous","Pierre","shells, fish, reptiles",,

,"Fall River County","SD","OnUS18? Near county line, tepee

,"Fall Rive Countyr","SD",,"Cretaceous","Pierre Shale","cephalopods -

,"Meade County","SD",,"Cretaceous","Pierre Shale","Cephalopods -

,"Pennington County","SD","In area

A Google search on "Pierre Shale" and "South Dakota" will probably
turn up a bunch of sites

Christians say you just carve those fossils out of the rock in any shape you
desire.

So what the hell doe that have to do with what I asked. I think you
need to go to a religious boardroom than a paleontological one.
