Back around about the same time of the demise of the Texas Super Collider
(TSC) a decade ago I ran across an article which pointed out that an even
more powerfull particle collider could be built using a laser with the
apparatus the size of a football field. Not only would it be many times more
powerfull than the TSC, but it would cost a fraction of the TSC to build &
operate.
Has any 1 heard any more about this type of project?

You mean the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC).
The technology you're referring to is wake-field acceleration, which is
a method that is in active development. It was just a well-worked out
theoretical idea a decade ago, but there have been steadily improving
experimental proofs of principle ever since then. In fact, a recently
published report showed some remarkable strides. See Science News for a
blurb.
However, the technology seems to be best suited for electrons and not
so appropriate for hadrons.
