Would you please help me out with a question in quantum mechanics? The
question is,
"why the constant term in a equation representing the superposition of
waves are complex numbers?".

So that, Squaring it (getting the Prob. Amplitude) may be positive or
negative. Note:  Square y=y y

If it were real numbers, squared will be positive numbers allways, adding.
there will be NO negative interference.
Being complex numbers, squared could be positive or negative, adding or
substracting. So that you can have both types of interference.

In general in Quantum Mec. requires representation it in Hilbert Spaces with
complex quantities.

See Feynmann articles about it in the Web.
Read about Hilbert Spaces, also.
See you.
