by what mechanism in general relativity does matter interact with the
dimensions of spacetime? this is Newtonian and cause and effect would
have to apply

in quantum mechanics, which alone is not compatible with general
relativity, at least space can have virtual particles and zero point
energy, I haven't seen this applied to time

do you know of any string theory which incorporates quantum mechanics and
general relativity that explains the interaction of mass with dimensions
of space and time? are space and time made up of strings?

The same mechanism that ghosts use to interact with ectoplasm.
Bovine excrement of the male kind.

The same mechanism particles can inhabit 3 dimensional space.

What applies is you think your incoherent word salad actually constitutes a
meaningful question - it doesn't.

How many times does it need to be pointed out before it sinks in.  GR is not
incompatible with QM:

Think of string theory as quantum field theory on steroids.

The short answer: no. The long answer: Perhaps. It has been toyed with
that space and time may be quantized. Read http://www.arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0303185
for some good info. Smolin is pretty much the goto guy for Quantum
Gravity. He has a lot of good layterm books out too.
