I just ran across mention of an article (by Marcus Chown?) about
splitting an electron. Could not find the article or any followup
info. Was this some kind of hoax?

Electron is a fermion and it can be splitted into quarks .

No, it's probably just a really bad exposition of the science.
Electrons are fundamental particles as far as we know (though that may
mean a particular vibrational mode of a string). Electrons can produce
pairs of particles via some processes, but this does NOT mean that the
particles were inside the electron in the first place.
