How would you describe a virtual photon? Imaginary mass/energy?

Does it have to be necessarily imaginary? As long as E^2 - p^2 = m^2
is not satisfied (where m = rest mass of the real particle)
its virtual...I guess. So, for a photon, if E^2 - p^2 is not equal to
zero, its virtual. So, E can be real, and E^2 - p^2 > 0 should still
be describing a virtual photon.
