Foreign atoms trigger superconductivity in carbon (Aug 30)
  http://physicsweb.org/article/news/9/8/18

Bulk quantities of a new carbon-based superconductor have been made by
physicists in France. Known as CaC6, the material contains "foreign"
carbon atoms inserted between hexagonal two-dimensional sheets of
graphite. The technique for making the material was devised by Nicolas
Emery of the University Henri Poincaré in Nancy and colleagues at the
University of Paris 6 & 7. The material becomes a superconductor when
   cooled to below 11.5 Kelvin.

"The first superconducting graphite-doped compound -- potassium
carbide (KC8) -- was discovered 40 years ago and had a Tc of just 0.14
Kelvin. Earlier this year, researchers showed that ytterbium carbide
(YbC6) aslo becomes superconducting at 6.5 Kelvin and obtained
tentative evidence that CaC6 superconducts at a temperature as high as
11.5 Kelvin. "

Aside from lattice symmetery observations, which may or may not be
important,

  1) Stick in the smallest possible Lewis acid cations, and

  2) Do a field survey of a few hundred graphite intercalcation
compounds of all kinds.  They are easy to make, fast and easy to
characterize by x-ray powder diffraction, and are physically robust
even if they are air- and moisture-reactive.  Anhydrous AlCl3
intercalcates like a shot.  BFs is then an obvious species of
interest.

It's scut work until something scores.  One would also survey Lewis
acid intercalcates of lamellar systems with potentially delocalizable
electrons like heavy metal chalogenides, h-BN... and homoatomic 2-D
boron nets like MgB2.
