A long, long time ago when UFOs were often in the news I remember reading
that a reasonable explanations was many sightings were of plasmas. I suspect
that's true, but has anyone developed these ideas further?

Yeah - UFOs are fueled by ceruloplasmin and butterfat,

what the hell's 'plasma' ? how does that make it 'reasonable' ? the
most reasonable explanation is that ufos are lies and hoaxes

Ionized gas.  Often found "in the wild" as a luminous, non-dissipative
structure we call "lightning", or "ball lightning":

Given the non-linear electrical properties of air (notably
conductivity), it is possible for an electrostatically charged mass of
air to be 'self-limiting' in a limited way, such that ionized air is
confined by the non-conductivity of the non-ionized air which
surrounds it.  The detailed explanation lies in plasma physics and
requires an understanding of non-linear differential equations.

Oh... you mean a cloud (a sort of visible air, kinda lonely).

Wherein it says:

"Another wanted a pound for their supermarket trolley. "
This wouldn't mean much to an American unless he related it to a baggage
buggy at the airport, where a fee is paid to obtain the cart and a refund
obtained  when it is returned. In Britain the buggies are chained together
and rather than pay someone to round them up in the grocery store's
parking lot the customer is expected to return them and is rewarded by
getting his pound back.

Move 'em on, head 'em up,
Head 'em up, move 'em out,
Move 'em on, head 'em out Rawhide!
Set 'em out, ride 'em in
Ride 'em in, let 'em out,
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in Rawhide.

They are chromium plated steel these days, not rawhide, but they are still
for meat shopping.

Given that you don't even know what a "plasma" is, and the fact that
I've seen UFOs and I happen to be a trained scientific observer, the
most reasonable explanation of your post is that you are an ignorant
liar.

I think ufos are just the moon in a relativistic and quantum display.

See:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/7489457.stm

Einstein asks if the moon is there when not observed.
Maybe there is a moon for each person and sometimes
the moon can just move elsewhere in the sky.

Every person does have thier own moon, want to see mine.
LOL
sorry could not resist.

Apparently, there's no one with something longer than a 10' pole on this
subject. Some more Googling turned up the leading proponent of plasmas as
good explanations of many UFO sightings. Philip Julian Klass. He died in
2005. There's a Wikipedia entry for him.

Sorry bunky, but UFOs is an "off limits' topic in science in general
and in this newsgroup in particular!  Any attempt to hold an
intelligent discussion on the subject will be met by a frontal
debunking attack in which you will be ridiculed, the idea that UFOs
might exist (no matter what they might be) will be made fun of, and
your mental state will be evaluated as insane by a number of people
with no credentials in psychiatry, psychology or mental health.

In short shut up and let us sweep this topic under the rug. Discussion
of it is NOT permitted!
