Earlier this year, I saw a fascinating British documentary on PBS, about how the Nazis did in fact have an experimental saucer shaped flyer. It was some kind of helicopter, with a huge fan blade in the center of a torus, and the fuselage around the outside. I can't remember whether we tried it after the war, but I think we gave it a brief test, and then moved on. I don't recall if the reason we gave up was because something was wrong with the concept, or if the guv'mint just had other budget priorities for test aircraft. There's also a ten dollar plastic toy, that's four inches across and flies off a little launcher, which I've seen Letterman use on his show. I wouldn't know what to call it, but "propdisk" sounds passable.
