What if you replaced the Leyden jars with large, modern capacitors?
Would that create a more powerful spark or what?

Large modern capacitors have a higher capacity than Leyden jars
but will not withstand the voltage. Therefore the spark will be fatter
but will not jump as far. Increasing the voltage will cause an internal
breakdown inside the large modern capacitor, damaging it
permanently, whereas the Leyden jar will continue to function.

That's one million dollars for my consultancy fee please, Mr. Richard
Billionaire.

Well, sorta.

There are modern high voltage capacitors that will outperform a Leyden
jar, but they aren't cheap unless you can find them at a surplus
dealer and even then...
