What is the purpose of adding sodium chloride to a caffeine solution
after suction filtration and just before extraction with chloroform in
a separatory funnel? I would be grateful for a reply.

probably to saturate the aqueous phase with NaCl, and make the
extraction easier.

I'm pretty shure the Idea is to increas the concentration of Cl ions
and force more of the Caffleine salt into the organic phase, excess HCl
can do the same job but it tends to make the chloroform soluable as
well. A much nicer extraction without cloroform can be done using
acetic acid or as the coffie decaffination companies are doing lately
CO2 will extract directly to an aquious phase, then the solution can be
left to stand or sparged with other gasses, in both of the previous
cases the objective is "Food Grade" caffeine.
