Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here knows of an
alternative base bath formulation for cleaning lab glassware.  Currently our
lab uses the standard KOH in 95% ethanol.  It works, but is harsh on
glassware and due to heavy use, requires frequent re-charging or partial
changes of solution (removal of sediments, etc).

Any suggestions, new recipes or references would be greatly appreciated.

How frequently are you finding it necessary to change the bath?

I think the major factor contributing to loss of effectiveness is
absorption of CO2 from the air.  The more you can prevent this the
longer your bath will last.  Unfortunately, base baths are usually
stored in large battery jars, which are difficult to seal.
