Hi!
I'm an italian student of Biotechnology, currently i'm having a
laboratory of biorganic chemistry and i'm preparing a report for this
exam.
I used p-anisaldehyde to develope my TLC sheet and i must write on my
report how this reagent works.
I searched in all kind of organic chemistry books both in italian and
english but i haven't found anything. I really don't know how to solve
this problem.
I just need to know how p-anisaldehyde works, what are the reactive
groups, why does it is coloured after heating in presence of products
Can you help?
thanks a lot

Well, only God knows what really happends. The basis of the procedure
is that the acids within the preparation (ethanolic solution of
p-anisaldehyde w/sulfuric and acetic acid) burns the compound and this
react with the anisaldehyde to give a colored product. Because of this,
the reagent is a very generall agent, reacting with almost every kind
of molecule (of course not allways work!!!). O containing and N
containing molecules works very well. Take for garanted the reagent
isn't functional group directed.
I hope I could help you.
