Quartz Origins (Uh-Oh, Another Geology Post)09 Jan 2009 06:29 GMT28
There is a chunk of quartz in our garden that came from the local area
(well, reasonably close). It appears unusual to me in that it is
rather vesicular. I don't recall seeing this type of composition in
quartz. The pores look similar to what one might see in pumice, except
Ancient Magma 'Superpiles' May Have Shaped The Continents09 Jan 2009 01:43 GMT68
ScienceDaily (Dec. 17, 2008) — Two giant plumes of hot rock deep
within the earth are linked to the plate motions that shape the
continents, researchers have found.
The two superplumes, one beneath Hawaii and the other beneath Africa,

Earth Jobs - Downtrend?17 Oct 2008 16:26 GMT1
I had a quick look at a job database in order to check the quantity of
open earth jobs (coal and geology jobs) published these days in the
USA, Canada and the UK. Everybody is talking about the job crisis and
the shrinking economy and just wanted to know what is out there on the
Ceo vs FeO08 Oct 2008 10:16 GMT4
I have a soil sample from Central California. It looks
suspiciously like CeO I have used for polishing optics,
but I realize it might be FeO.
Anyone know specific tests to verify if this is CeO.
Garnets in southern Nevada26 Sep 2008 22:11 GMT1
I understand that there is a relatively remote locality in southern
Nevada where "sizeable" garnets can be found in rhyolite ashflow tuff,
possibly an ignimbrite, occuring on the flanks of a large Tertiary
volcano, most likely a large caldera ehich is not easily recognized as
microstructure of nephrite, and dust hazards18 Jun 2008 13:39 GMT6
I believe nephrite (New Zealand greenstone, pounamu) has a microscopically
fibrous structure.
What happens when you grind it to dust?

Does anyone know the status of collecting at the Elwood mine area in

Ocean Circulation26 Dec 2008 07:47 GMT2
I recently started studing ocean ciruculation and did not get the basic
idea how it works.
As a starting point I imagine a planet (perfect bowl) with flat ground,
water on top, no landmasses and equal solar radiation on all places. So

Diffrence between a Volcano and a "Super" volcano08 Jan 2009 02:38 GMT4
When a volcano erupts, it leaves a "Crater", and generally the
mountain remains as with Crater Lake. When a "Super" volcano erupts
itt leaves a "Caldera"such as Yellowstone and Long Valley and the
mountain is gone, caved in on the empty magma chamber.
