Rupture question13 Jan 2005 02:56 GMT11
I am wondering about some details of the rupture of last week's earthquake.
The rupture seems to be a limited part (1000 km) of the plate boundaries. Is
the sliding velocity between the plates zero at the two end points of the
rupture? Is the sliding velocity discontinuous ...
Las Palmas volcano eruption - Florida submerged?12 Jan 2005 18:11 GMT43
Would you guess Florida will be completely destroyed all the way to
Tampa, or, if not, how far inland in FL would you have to be to have a
reasonable chance of survival?

Hoping for some good pictures, my wife and I drove over the San Rafael
Bridge and down to the Marin Headlands.  The waves were okay, not what I've
seen before, but the 7 foot tide made one stop and think.

...or does there seem to be a marked increase in the number of M4+ earthquakes
since last Christmas. Is this a record of some sort [since they've been keeping

Why wasn't the Earthquake Enough Warning?10 Jan 2005 22:55 GMT19
I realize there was no tsunami warning system in that part of the
world, but why wasn't the 9.0 earthquake in itself a warning to get to
higher ground?
I realize that earthquakes don't always cause tsunamis. But a 9.0
Seismic FAQ10 Jan 2005 22:46 GMT3
For almost two weeks I've been working on the beginnings
of a 'Seismic FAQ' for the group.
It's wildly incomplete but far enough along that I thought
I'd show what's done so far.

start coming in in the next few days.

US Geological Survey should have sent out Tsunami warnnings.10 Jan 2005 15:12 GMT61
Maybe no one was monitoring world earth quake activity because it was
Christmas and the full moon?
When the 9.0 quake hit if some one was watching it should have been
obvious that coastlines along the indian ocean deserved some warning.
