Can anyone tell me a brief history of optics?

The club where I work is considering getting a laser system. It's
a large club, which will handle about 3000 people. Right now
I'm trying to learn the basics of it all. Can anyone suggest some
good  places to start, and/or other good discussion groups?

     I have a question aabout integrating sphere.
     What is the better ratio of sphere size to the light source size for
getting the more correct result?

This question is about Scotopic and Photopic sensitivity and lasers. As
I understand it from the reference below, under daylight conditions

I've been experimenting with applying a very thin layer -- about the
thickness of a single piece of Scotch brand tape -- of
microcrystalline wax between two pieces of glass. I'm so far having
no luck.
