I am confused by the fact that there is a background gauge field put in
when talking of the T-duality of open strings with chan-paton factors.
Since string theory is a first quantized theory of strings are we

presence of strong gravitational fields, will gravitational waves start
interacting with each other, to the extent that gravitational collapse
may take place?
