mapped the disc around a star more massive than the Sun01 Oct 2006 00:28 GMT3
With the VISIR instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope, astronomers
have mapped the disc around a star more massive than the Sun. The very
extended and flared disc most likely contains enough gas and dust to
spawn planets. It provides the rare opportunity to witness the
Speed  Limit30 Sep 2006 17:11 GMT19
The speed limit is the speed of light. And the change of speed limit
is below this. Otherwise if you could change your speed in a light speed
acceleration you would reach light speed.
Velocity and acceleration are related and both are limited.
Question regarding the relationship between GR and SR30 Sep 2006 05:02 GMT11
I was wondering what would happen in the following (hypothetical)
scenario:
Say there is an extremely massive planet with person A on it and
person B is in a spaceship outside of its gravity field. (The planet

Echo time in Schwarzschild coordinates/metric28 Sep 2006 21:05 GMT19
A very simple question:
Suppose, static at a partcular r in Schwarzschild coordinates (in the
Schwarzschild metric, of course) I sent a laser pulse radially inward
to a mirror 1 meter away (as measured by my meter stick).  How do I

Aren't they downside  up?28 Sep 2006 13:40 GMT8
Why are "spacetime" diagrams drawn downside up?
If we're falling through the void, shouldn't our paths point downwards.
It's much easier then to visualize our galaxy going down the plug hole.
By the way, why don't the stars go around the galaxy at the right speed?

"Is There a Force of Gravity?"28 Sep 2006 02:22 GMT1
"Is There a Force of Gravity?"
In undergraduate physics, the Newtonian concept of an attractive force
between masses that is proportional to the product of the masses divided by
the square of their separation is taught. When one advances to the more
