atomic mass unit question30 Jan 2005 17:42 GMT4
I have what i thought was a simple question regarding the atomic mass
unit but I haven't been able to find a satisfactory answer anywhere. If
one amu is defined as 1/12 the mass of a carbon-12 atom, then how can a
neutron (1.0087 amu) and a proton (1.0073 amu) both be greater than 1

A letter to the editor in J.Chem.Ed has pointed out that though osmium
is commonly shown in textbooks to be the densest element known to man,
but this is incorrect because NBS circular 539, volume 4 has reported
the ideal densities of Os as 22.583g/ml and that of iridium as 22.661
