hydrochinon goes brown and black29 Apr 2005 22:03 GMT3
When hydrochinon (C6H4(OH)2) is solved in water then liquid is clear
and has no color. When sodium hydroxid is added then the liquid goes
dark soon. After minutes liquid is black. It is oxidized with oxygen in
air.
Coupling HPLC with a magnetic susceptibility detector?29 Apr 2005 18:30 GMT3
During a casual discussion a colleague came up with the possibility of
coupling HPLC with a magnetic susceptibility detector say a electronic
Gouy balance after suitable modification for producing a real time
plot, for detecting paramagnetic transition metal compounds say in a

Thiol FG transformation29 Apr 2005 15:25 GMT5
I want to know the best way to convert an primary alkyl chloride,
R-Cl, into a thiol group, R-SH.  I have already tried using NaSH (SH
minus as nucleophile)plus heating, but this doesn't seem to touch it
even if left for 24 hours at 80 degrees.  Does anyone know of any
pleochroism29 Apr 2005 13:40 GMT3
Are there ab initio computations that let one predict that a certain
crystal will be pleochroic and to predict the angle through which the
plane of polarization of light will be rotated as a function of the
frequency of the light? References to the relevant literature are welcome.
pyrogallol chemoluminescence29 Apr 2005 12:08 GMT4
hi group
I found an older article : it is a " recipe" to give a orange coloured
chemoluminescence.

dramatic chemical reactions29 Apr 2005 11:29 GMT36
It's been years since I last studied chemistry. Can anyone
enumerate the most dramatic reactions such as combining
two elements or liquid that can change its color and
especially those easily acquired and not explosive. I
Perchlorate contamination: How serious, how to fix?28 Apr 2005 23:27 GMT8
I would think that a strong oxidizer like ammonium perchlorate would
have a relatively short chemical half life, especially in soils
containing organic matter and trace metals, which most do. But there
are these stories popping up about groundwater problems around old
Magic bullets28 Apr 2005 21:56 GMT7
I recall reading some work by an ex-CIA engineer/chemist who worked on covert
weapons. He mentioned that he produced a micro-genade/bullet that was lethal via
the extreme toxicity of its fragments. The latter were composed of some rare
earth (IIRC) and the people collapsed/died ...
Hydrogen powered cars28 Apr 2005 20:38 GMT21

Take a look at the latest Scientific American -- there is a very
good summary article on hydrogen (H2) fuel cells for automotive use.
Frankly, it is very discouraging -- at least in the short term.  All
Rate Equations28 Apr 2005 18:52 GMT2
Can anyone tell me an appropriate rate model to fit a ligand with two
substrate binding sites, if binding is reversible.
Energy released when something changes from gas to liquid...28 Apr 2005 17:13 GMT2
You know how you can feel the energy added to a boiling pot of water as
it changes from a liquid phase to a gas phase?  Or like when you stick
your hand in a freezer and feel the energy from the atmosphere added in
your hand as it becomes cooler.  Can anybody think of an example in
what school did you graduate from?27 Apr 2005 20:07 GMT6
After writing and reading my last post, I became curious what schools
people on this board graduated from.  Fill out whatever you want, I'm
just curious.

absorption coefficient27 Apr 2005 17:10 GMT6
Where can I find absorption coefficients of Propane from wavelength
range 4000nm to 3000nm?And are there any data base which can  provide
values of other parameters related to absorption for some other gases
like methane,n-butane?
More on CuSal and DMSO27 Apr 2005 16:29 GMT9
4% Copper salicylate in 70:30 DMSO:water
I get (after a day or so) a green precipitate which I assume is Cu hydroxide.
However, it is clear that not all the CuSal is hydrolysing since not enough
Cu(OH)2 appears, plus the soln stays green indefinately.
