Question for Amateur Chemists31 Jan 2006 14:00 GMT10
I'm a journalist researching a story about how increasing concerns
about liability, national security, meth labs and so forth are making
it tougher on amateur chemists who are unaffiliated with major
institutions to obtain the materials (basic chemicals, labware) they
lle of water-ethanol-ethylpropionate system31 Jan 2006 08:23 GMT3
is it feasible to have "lle of water-ethanol-ethylpropionate system"
[q] Definition of Protein Hydrolyzation31 Jan 2006 07:25 GMT2
Is it correct to define whey protein hydrolization as a process which
breaks the protien down into separated amino acids and peptides?
(: warning ... chem newbie :)
How to correct absorption spectrum of a fluorescent compound?30 Jan 2006 16:45 GMT3
I came across a related problem (of academic interest) in Galen Ewing's
book on Instrumental Analysis.
"The absorption spectrum of a fluorescent substance determined with a
coventional spectrophotometer is likely to be in error because of
Enzyme Kinetics30 Jan 2006 12:54 GMT1
Hi every one
In Michaelis-Menton kinetics for enzyme, it is assumed that [S]total
>>[E]total, and it is further assumed that we are only analysing the initial velocity.
If the substrate concentration is very high than the enzyme
Quantitative Analysis of CaO in the mixture29 Jan 2006 20:51 GMT7
Dear
I have powders which is mixtures of CaO, CaTiO3, CaCO3..
Then I'm not sure the percentage of CaO in the powder.
Is there any easy way to find that?
Propylene for weight loss29 Jan 2006 16:45 GMT2
Anyone know what this is? Can't be C3H6 can it?
Fluorescent Ink in Yellow Highlighters29 Jan 2006 16:06 GMT4
Does anyone have an clue of the chemical identity of the ink used in
common yellow highlighters?  An aqueous extract of this ink brightly
glows green in sunlight and has a sharp absorption peak of 450 nm
(solvent water) in the 300 to 800 nm range.
how to synthesize calcium ethoxide, Ca(OC2H5)229 Jan 2006 12:12 GMT4
I'm trying to make calcium ethoxide, Ca(OC2H5) using alkoxide process.
At this moment, I have Calcium granules not powder forms.
Can I get calcium ethoxide by mixing Calcium granules with dehydrated
ethanol in the Nitrogen?
Question about organic synthesis29 Jan 2006 02:13 GMT1
Practical question: After working out a step-by-step synthesis for an
organic compound on paper, what is the best way to decide if the
synthesis is any good - that is, without testing it out in the lab?
Regards.
Where can I buy NaOH ampoules?28 Jan 2006 23:34 GMT2
Hi, I'm kind of an amateur chemist. Anyway, I'd like to buy ampoules
with NaOH, that I can dilute with water when I need to and make 0.1 or
0.01N solution. I looked in different places but with no luck. Can
anybody tell me where to find this kind of stuff? Thanks in advance.
Selection Rule: Jablonski diagram28 Jan 2006 15:12 GMT1
The general selection rule in a molecule for an electronic transition
is /_\n = +/-1. However most of the diagrams shown for fluorescence and
phosphorescence phenomena show transitions So -> S2 and So -> S1. The
former has /_\n = +2. Does this rule break down for complex molecules?
E=mc**227 Jan 2006 10:23 GMT9
In chemistry we are having exothermic reaction like burning chaircoal.
If you burn several thousands tons of carbon, considerable thermal
energy is evolved. What is happening with the atoms - are some of them
are disappeared or all of them are lighter, because E=mc**2 ? Any
Compounds of carbon and oxygen27 Jan 2006 06:08 GMT9
Does anyone know if there are any other stable compounds containing
just carbon and oxygen, apart from carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide?
High Density Liquids27 Jan 2006 06:05 GMT9
The CRC mentions thallium malonate-thallium formate; density = 4.9
g/cc.
I need a non toxic cheap -- 10 cents/lb -- heavy liquid.  Rho > 3 gm/cc
If that doesn't exist let's just go for cheap.
