Porous graphite for electrodes31 Dec 2006 08:51 GMT4
I am looking for a source of porous graphite such as could be
used as non-reactive electrodes in saline solutions. I need the
very large surface to volume ration that porous or fibrous carbon
could provide. There is no need for high electrical conductivity,
chem3D modeling/ heme30 Dec 2006 19:53 GMT1
Does anyone have any expertise in using chem3D to model hemes or
metalloporphyrins?  I drew the metalloporphyrin in ChemDraw using their
suggestions (under complexes) of two normal bonds and two dative bonds,
but when I open it up in Chem3D it claims not recognize any of the
active corrosion protection29 Dec 2006 19:31 GMT4
In an effort to prolong the service life of two Berkeley jet drives on my
cabin cruiser I contemplate making an active protection system. The jets are
made of powder coated light alloy with stainless steel hardware and moving
parts. As early as 1 month after immersion in seawater ...
How to waterproof a sprayhood?29 Dec 2006 09:08 GMT3
The thin fabric has a metallic-look outside coating that really repelled
water when it was new. After two seasons of seaspray and UV, it  lost this
property. Instead of forming round drops that roll off the hood, the water
now is an even film that penetrates the fabric and forms ...
hydrogen: im- or ex-plosion?29 Dec 2006 04:33 GMT5
When you invert an empty test tube over one containing zinc and HCl
and half a minute later move the inverted one over a bunsen flame you
get a healthy POP.
Do you reckon that sound is caused predominately by an IMplosion or by
Effects of methane on rubber29 Dec 2006 04:11 GMT2
Can anyone tell me if methane gas will damage rubber? Synthetic rubber
or natural rubber? Thanks,
Artist Looking for Ideas Re: Staining & Corrosion28 Dec 2006 20:35 GMT1
I'm a non-scientist part-time artist experimenting with different
elements to use in lieu of paints to create art.  I've used rust
directly on canvas as a medium by sandwiching sheets of canvas with
rusting metal pieces and periodically adding water to promote the
do we sense temperature directly?28 Dec 2006 09:21 GMT31
We feel hot and cold, but from a physics viewpoint,
do we really sense temperature, or do we actually
sense the flow of heat to/from the body?
I'm thinking about the skin surface, but I suppose the
Barium Titanate powder problems27 Dec 2006 14:01 GMT2
I need to find a binding for barium titanate powder. I think to use
a silicon glue as binding but I don't know in what proportion .
I am interested too to not very difficult alternatives i.e. to use
other binding , different from silicon , to make compact bariun
NMR- precession of protons26 Dec 2006 05:54 GMT3
I am trying to visualize the magnetic resonance experiment but the
direction of precession of the magnetic moment has been troubling me.
Let us suppose a proton is spinning anticlockwise, with the right hand
rule the magnetic moment of the proton will point up (in the +z

What is in my hydrolic fluid?25 Dec 2006 02:09 GMT4
Its a white color. It came out of my power steering. My brother put
some in his vacume chamber and thought this would take the air out of
the fluid. I had told him I thought it was air mixed with hydraulic
fluid. Didn't work. Next he heated it to 140degrees and tried again.

Oxidation States in Elements24 Dec 2006 02:28 GMT8
What determines the oxidation state in a transition Metal when combined
with a compound? (Ie something like Iron or Copper that has 2 Oxidation
states) For example, If I combined Iron with Oxygen, what would
determine if I get FeO or Fe2O3? What Oxidation State do noble Metals
