what's wrong with silicone?31 Jan 2007 16:24 GMT15
Silicone polymers were once found in car wax, as lubricants, water
repellants etc. I wanted to buy some silicone oil in the local hardware
store, but found only products marked as 'Silicone-free', 'Contains 0%
Silicone' and 'Silicone remover'. So what's wrong with it? Is there

Heat Transfer of Air Cooled, Water Filled Radiator?30 Jan 2007 21:07 GMT16
I would like some idea of the amount of cooling that a water filled, air
cooled radiator can provide.  Or if someone could point me at a usable
resource on the subject, that would be great.  It's been over 20 years
since I had a heat transfer class.

Manganese oxide insoluble in acid?29 Jan 2007 22:42 GMT13
I bought some manganese oxide through a pottery-supplier for use in a
phosphating bath. But it's totally insoluble in acid, not even strong
hydrochloric acid seems to do much. What gives? Wich oxide can this be and
how do I dissolve it in phosphoric acid?

Any difference between aluminum chlorohydrate and poly aluminum chloride?29 Jan 2007 20:13 GMT1
I am checking on the use of different aluminum-oxygen complexes as
water treatment chemicals.  I appear to have the choice of using
polyaluminum chloride (made by base hydrolysis of aluminum chloride)
or aluminum chlorohydrate (made by treating aluminum hydroxide with
Ethanol and CO229 Jan 2007 19:28 GMT6
How does CO2 production from ethanol and gasoline compare when the entire
cycle is considered, including ethanol and gasoline production and
combustion?
Purpose of Wick28 Jan 2007 20:05 GMT3
What is the purpose of a wick on an oil lamp?  I think that I know the
answer but I am uncertain.  I think that a wick allows for uptake of
the fuel.  I think that a wick is used to keep the flame in a single
area rather than dispersed over the area of the surface of lit fuel.

Uncle Al (or anyone else) - need some help getting  lecithin out of kerosene28 Jan 2007 06:50 GMT2
A friend has 265 gallons of kerosene that was dumped into a tank that
used to have lecithin in it, and now he can't use it in his heater
because it gunks up the wick in short order.  I suggested water or
water/alcohol extraction to remove the lecithin and it helped a lot, but
