answer about an aqueous solution of formaldehyde22 Jul 2008 19:29 GMT4
We are a group of students taking a MSc degree in Chemical and
Biochemical Engineering.
We need to get some information about an aqueous solution of
formaldehyde (60% wt.) for our project.
SODIUM THIOSULFATE AND POTASSIUM IODIDE22 Jul 2008 18:01 GMT2
when i add 6 drops of lugols(potassium iodide) to 4 ounces of water,
then water turn deep iodine yellow, and stays that way until I add 3
drops of sodium thiosulfate , at which the water becomes clear. My
question is: when I drink the water, will I absorb the iodine or will
cathode in lemon battery22 Jul 2008 17:19 GMT14
We all know you can get a current flowing between dissimilar metals
inserted into a lemon (or potato or vinegar or a beer, etc..), but I
am at a loss to explain why different cathodes would produce different
voltages. The metal its self is not reducing (I'm assuming ions in the

Nanogold and Molten Sulfur Reactions?20 Jul 2008 22:51 GMT1
I'm aware that sulfur thiols (and perhaps even Thiosulfate like from
geyers, vents, etc) and nanogold particles (especially nanogold
particles less than 5nm) react so that gold thiol complexes are
formed. What about pure molten sulfur around 300C in open air? If
Brake fluid + radiator coolant19 Jul 2008 12:06 GMT11
I am looking for some reference material that shows what happens when
brake fluid (DOT 3) is added to ethylene glycol.
An automotive shop put the brake fluid into my coolant. (approx. 4
ounces from the master cylinder)
Aqueous Solution18 Jul 2008 18:58 GMT1
Can someone help me figure out this problem?
I need to find the molality of an aqueous C6H12O6 solution that has a
boiling point of 100.8C. The Kb is 0.51C and Bp is 100 C
Thank you,
Ethanol vs Photovoltaic18 Jul 2008 11:04 GMT3
As I understand it photosynthesis is ~6% efficient and then conversion
to ethanol is ~65%. Thus ignoring all the costs of growing,
fertilizing, transporting… less than 4% of the energy from the sun is
captured in ethanol. Some analysis I’ve seen say that a total energy
Cheap and Easy Homemade Aluminum Hydroxide?17 Jul 2008 19:50 GMT2
Hello - I'm interested in making large quantities of Aluminum
Hydroxide [Al(OH)3]. It is a compound that decomposes at 300C, which
is perfect as a heating buffer-medium in a personal project. That is,
I wish to use an arbitrary heat source applied directly to the

I'm at Whole Foods the other day, they have this array
of recycle bins, sheesh, you need a PhD to toss your garbage.
Anyway, I throw the plastic utensils into the trash, one
of the staff says, "That's biodegradable, toss it in the
Dyes16 Jul 2008 03:32 GMT1
I need to color code some electrolytes.  Anyone know what
common dyes stand up to stuff like concentrated acetic acid and KBr?
No proprietary dyes, just ones I can order out of Spectrum please.
