Can someone help me identify what the heck these things are that are crawling around my house in Long Island, New York? They are about 2 inches long when full grown and about 1/2 inch long as tiny babies. Boy are they ugly.

I sometimes have to chase around, catch, and throw outside a big noisy bug that I can't ID. Viewed from the top, it's hard 'wings' (which are pretty noisy when then insect flies) have the shape of a shield (similar to the 'security center' icon on windows xp) which is rather dark ...
