N. californica population explosion31 May 2005 21:46 GMT1
There's a 10 acre (+/-) patch of stripped ceanothus bushes on Navarro
Ridge in Mendocino County CA that will soon produce a population
explosion of Nymphalis californica (the fuse is lit). The property owner
is leery of both tourists and vampire butterflies. Let me know if
Please help ID a beetle31 May 2005 20:11 GMT3
Does anyone know the name of beetles in South Florida, zone 10B, that have
fluorescent eyes?  I saw one in my hallway this morning and it totally
freaked me out.  After I calmed down, I wish I had taken a picture before my
husband threw it in the yard.  The eyes are similar to a ...
Another sad day in Mexico29 May 2005 22:12 GMT2
Hola List, this sad event this week probably happened about 125 miles away
from the Monarch Forests, and I am not posting it to get into an argument on
what anyone thinks about Monarchs or related phenomena, just posting to give
those in other cultures with different systems ...

I was wondering if anyone could identify this little guy...
He's about a millimetre in size, with a round, red body. Rather
nondescript physique, with lengthy antennae.

Mystery insect18 May 2005 14:17 GMT2
I need help identifying a bizarre flying insect found on my porch
yesterday in Daytona Beach, Florida. At first I thought it was some
kind of wasp so I didn't want to get too close! It might even have been
some kind of moth although it looked more like a wasp. The dominant
Can someone help me identify what the heck these crawlies are?14 May 2005 05:30 GMT2
Can someone help me identify what the heck these things are that are
crawling around my house in Long Island, New York? They are about 2
inches long when full grown and about 1/2 inch long as tiny babies.
Boy are they ugly.
chubby aggressive spider12 May 2005 08:54 GMT1
I was wondering if someone could identify this spider or tell me a bit about it (photo link below).  The location is the interior (Okanagan region) of British Columbia, Canada.  Found on the porch door frame.  In the picture its leg span was roughly 3cm (making for a rather large ...

I took the photo a couple of days ago-- it looks to be a mimic of a bumblebee/carpenter bee.
Miami Blue & Mosquito control09 May 2005 03:34 GMT21
I received in the mail today an important publication on the Miami Blue (
Cyclargus thomasi bethunebakeri) and the status of mosquito control in the
Florida Keys.  This extensive article comprises all of Volume 5 of the

Bug Watchers04 May 2005 08:17 GMT2
There are lots of bird watchers and there are amateur astronomers
and their are clubs of amateur mushroom hunters. I'm not aware of
comparable groups of bug watchers. If I'm wrong about that, I'd
like to know about it.

examinging the image I found it had 4 wings.
Need info on smelly flying bug01 May 2005 10:44 GMT2
I sometimes have to chase around, catch, and throw outside a big noisy bug
that I can't ID. Viewed from the top, it's hard 'wings' (which are pretty
noisy when then insect flies) have the shape of a shield (similar to the
'security center' icon on windows xp) which is rather dark ...

Could somebody take a look at the pictures entitled "Weird Scottish

alt.binaries.pictures.animals newsgroup and tell me what it is? If it
