How can I differentiate between yeasts & moulds growing on Malt Extract Agar (upon visual examination of the colonies only)? I was under the impression that in general if the colonies were 'round & smooth' they were yeasts and if they were 'woolly/fibres' or looked rough

I'm helping out my daughter with a school experiment involving bacteria response to different disinfectant applications. I'm using a LW Scientific Observer II 4 - 10 - 40 scope. 400x seems just enough to see the critters, however, it doesn't magnify

Last week I saw in BBC NEWS that a diagnostic kit has been approved by Food and Drug Administration which has a swab like thing ,which can detect the presence of HIV virus when introduced in mouth . if any one could tell me about it then it would be very helpful.
